Welcome to a new year at Pine Hollow Middle School! This is also my first year at PHMS and it's my first year at a year-round school. I am excited to be on this adventure with you. In science, we will have five major units and a small introductory unit. You can find out more information about what we will be learning specifically in the "Curriculum Map & Objectives" section.
Some important things to know: I will be having after school tutoring sessions each week this year once we get into our first unit. There will be a form to fill out if you'd like to have your child attend. Please know that this is a week by week basis depending on need for that specific objective. Keep a look out in the weekly updates (here) for when that will begin. As of right now, it will be on Tuesday afternoons, but that may change due to required staff meetings. I really do love having parent and family involvement in my classroom! If you would like to volunteer, I'd love to have you! Just send me an e-mail and we can work something out. If you have a science background and would like to co-teach a lesson about what you do, let me know and we can start planning. Even if you don't have a science background, we can still find ways to get you involved if you'd like to be. Extra hands are always needed during experiments and labs!

Some students are still having trouble accessing Google Classroom and need to complete their notes at home. I have included the links from the Google assignment below.
Students had the option to take an extra credit packet today. This packet contains 62 questions that will help us review for EOGs. There are 3 questions from each standard we have covered this year. This is optional. Please encourage your child to take this opportunity. We are awarding 1% extra credit for every question they get correct toward whichever grade they choose to apply it. For example, if your child earns gets 40 questions correct and they have one minor as a 70% and one as an 80%, they could use 30% of their extra credit to raise the first grade to a 100% and the rest to raise the other grade to a 90%. This is a great opportunity! This will be due 5/
This week we have been trying something new! With our new laptops, we have been working in Google Classroom. I love this website because I am able to restrict access to only students, which means that I am able to post ALL articles/presentations, etc., even if I did not create them myself. Have your child show you tonight what they've been working on. The activity they are working to complete this week is due at the end of class tomorrow. We will also be having an open-note quiz on Monday. This is not "announced", but is written on my board in a very large font. :)
We actually have a little bit of homework today, due Friday. No worries- it is a small assignment to get us thinking about the Space Invaders unit we start tomorrow. Students get to pick one of four options below to read, annotate, and answer comprehension questions. It is important that your child has this work complete by Friday- we will be using it for an activity! *Some students are able to get finished with it today if they finish their test early or if they completed a project!*
We are now starting the second half of the waves unit, focusing on mostly on sound. We will also review heat transfer and seismic waves before wrapping up this unit. The test will be Wednesday, May 3rd. Students will have the option again to complete a project in lieu of taking the test. We will be discussing this in class next week, but if you'd like to get a sneak peak, check out the assignment below. Also attached: Sound notes for Thurs 4/20 and Sound & Hearing presentation.
Welcome back from break! Hope everyone had a nice, relaxing week! Remember- the choice assessment is WEDNESDAY! Study guides and projects are due before the test. Students who complete the project will be assigned a time to present over the next week. There will be no answer key to this study guide given. Instead, students have the option to visit me for mini "review sessions" where I will review a topic and answer any questions they have about the study guide. ** I wanted to note that my entire 4th core refused these sessions today. No one "attended" a review session in that class. If your child is in my 4th core and is NOT doing a project, please chat with them about this decision.**
The choice assessment is back! This time, it is all presentation based. Students WILL get time to work on this in class- Monday and Tuesday when we get back from break. Projects are due the day of the test, and presentations will begin at random the day of the test if possible. Please make sure your child has any materials needed for their project AT SCHOOL when we return from break. If they come unprepared, they will be required to take the test. Students MUST work on the projects AT SCHOOL. They will only work on it for homework if it is not completed at school.
