Whew, with all these snow days/delays, things are getting really mixed up! Because of the weather, we will still be testing the remainder of this week. While I had a substitute, students read, annotated, and answered comprehension questions using the two article below. I will be working after benchmark the next two days to make sure that each student has completed and turned in BOTH assignments and your help would be greatly appreciated. We also started the matter unit with a Prezi and notes. Click the button below to review the presentation and check your child's notes with the guided notes, also attached. We have not yet gotten through the entire Prezi, but please feel free to get ahead! :)

We are still having some technical difficulties with our online grade book. The county is currently trying to fix the problem. If you have any specific questions about you child's grade in the meantime, please feel free to send me an e-mail and I will respond as quickly as I can. Thank you for you patience. :)
After the last unit, most of my students said that they liked starting out the unit by getting their own time to work on vocabulary, so we are doing that again for this unit. We have spent time on DiscoveryEducation.com using the "interactive glossary" in order to get a definition and picture for each of the words. These notes should be in their science notebooks if you'd like to check them out. With the exception of my first period (we had technical difficulties on Monday), all students should have COMPLETED this work today. If they did not, they need to complete the words on their own time.
Vocabulary: atom, thermal energy, boiling point, freezing point, element, physical property, melting point, matter, pure substance, compound, heterogeneous, homogeneous, mixture, solution, solute, solvent, colloid, atomic mass, atomic number, periodic table, molecule **This is NOT a definitive list. We WILL continue to add words to this list as we progress through this unit.** Students are just finishing up the Growing and Flowing Unit this week with our biome presentations and "global summit" tomorrow. Students are reading various articles online about how humans impact the environment to finish our objective about the relationships between biotic and abiotic factors.
Next week, we will start the "What's the Matter?" Unit. I would recommend looking over some of the resources from last year in the "Extra Resources" tab to get familiar with this unit before be begin, as it is one of our most difficult units of the year. **Just a reminder that we will be having our mid-year science benchmark at the end of this month. Please review vocabulary and concepts from this semester in preparation for this test. |
